1. Have a money talk first!
Our first tip is to start by setting your own budget together with your partner. Yup! We’ve said it. Now you may be thinking; but what if the budget we set is unrealistic? What if I don’t know what weddings costs? And while these are valid questions, you should not start out by comparing or going by what some may say is an “average budget” because many times reality is different, and most importantly YOUR reality is different. There’s no need to go broke over a wedding, however there’s also nothing wrong with having a longer engagement period if it means you can save longer to afford more luxurious options. So, the first thing to do is to have a chat together about how much you are both comfortable on spending, it’s very important not just for your wedding but for your marriage to have frank financial talks. Once you have this talk, you can come up with an amount you both feel comfortable with (keep in mind though what you may want to spend may not always align with your dreams, but more on this later!)
2. Draft up your guest list and your dream wedding
Your number of guests has a big impact on your budget, and not just in terms of food and beverage but also in terms of décor (think extra tables, extra chairs, extra linen) etc. Deciding on how many guests you wish to have is one of the key information to have , to see if your desired budget is feasible for that amount of people. The next thing you should do is write down your vision for your wedding, the type of atmosphere you want to create or type of food you want to serve are also factors that effect your budget. Don’t be afraid to write it down first to compare and contrast later.
3. Reach out to an industry professional for some Real talk feedback!
Once you have determined what you may want to spend and what you want for your number of guests it is VERY important to reach out to wedding industry professional in your desired destination to check if your budget fits with your wishes and your number of guests. A wedding planner for example might be able to tell you what tweaks or adjustments you may need to make to either your budget, your guest list or your wishes. Sometimes there are alternatives to something that you may want that is just as nice or very similar, or sometimes it’s a matter of cutting some people of, off your guest list. Having some real feedback from someone who actually knows the real deal is very important! Sometimes averages you find online or what other people tell you may be way off! Avoid looking at averages and avoid the comparison game
4. Be open minded & Flexible
In order to have a stress-free experience and wedding it is important to stay open minded and be flexible, as mentioned above, you may need to tweak some things like maybe switch you’re your type of chairs or change a flower type. It’s all about choices and priorities. We are definitely not here to say that a budget of xyz can’t be done, it just may not be possible for your number of guests or for your type of vision, and here’s where your flexibility comes in with choosing if you want to adjust your guest list, your vision or perhaps your desired wedding date so you can save longer.
5. Love your priorities and stay focused!
Once you determine what your priorities are focus on those first! Your other details will follow later. Always remember though to consider what is appropriate for a great experience for both you and your guests. It is best to focus on the important things and don’t sweat too much about the rest.
